The Inner Machinations of Messed Up Minds: NHS Rhetoric of Horror Anthology - Spring 2024
Screenshot (90).png

The brave seniors of Newton High School (Newton, Kansas) took the first 'scary' step by enrolling in Rhetoric of Horror during the 2023-2024 school year. This course examined major concepts in the horror genre. Studies in this academic area provided space for students to work through major cultural problems and explore cultural anxieties we share about trauma, sexuality, difference, and mortality. These themes are negotiated, often indirectly, through the horror genre. The emphasis of this course was not on the appreciation of film or literary art, but rather, on theories about how horror is used and how horror works in our culture. It requires students to consider what scares people and how texts and media appeal to audiences. The final for this course involved students using horror tropes ('the bad place', vampires, 'the beast within', 'the thing with no name', and ghosts.)

Cold by
Connor Reed
Screenshot (91).png

Connor Reed, in his inaugral novel tells the story of a world ravaged by war, the year is 2034 and the Earth is a desolate wasteland gripped by a never-ending nuclear winter. The conflict between Russia and Germany has left technology in ruins and reduced to instruments of destruction. A third of humanity survived the devastating Russian attacks, but their existence is now haunted by mutated corpses revived by radiation, rumored to be creatures straight from Hell.

Amidst this chaos, Danta Milano emerges as a beacon of hope. Leading a team of soldiers and elites from the Peacekeeper Corps, he embarks on a perilous journey onto the surface, determined to save what remains of the human race. Join Dante as he confronts the horrors of this new world, battles against formidable foes, and struggles to restore a semblance of order and peace in a landscape dominated by darkness and despair.
